Rosella Park School follows the Queensland Department of Education’s Science of Reading approach to ensure every student receives high-quality, evidence-based literacy instruction. The Science of Reading draws on decades of research about how the brain learns to read and focuses on building strong foundations in phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
In a special school setting, we adapt this approach so every student can access literacy learning at their level and in ways that meet their individual needs. This may include explicit teaching of early reading and language skills, structured phonics programs, daily opportunities to engage with meaningful texts, and the use of AAC, symbols, visuals and assistive technology to support understanding and expression. We celebrate all forms of literacy—from recognising environmental print and engaging with stories, to developing decoding, writing and communication skills.
By combining the Science of Reading with personalised, strengths-based pathways, we ensure that every student is supported to make progress, experience success and develop a lifelong connection with language and learning.
